What Is MANCOVA and When Do You Use It?

- The covariate should correlate with the dependent variables but not be confounded with the independent variable, as in ANCOVA.
- Multivariate normality of the dependent variables, as a practical proxy checked via each DV’s univariate normality.
How to Run It in SPSS (Step by Step)
- Go to Analyze > General Linear Model > Multivariate.
- Move your two or more continuous outcomes into Dependent Variables.
- Move your categorical independent variable into Fixed Factor(s).
- Move your continuous covariate(s) into Covariate(s).
- Click Options, check Homogeneity tests and Estimates of effect size, then Continue > OK.
How to Interpret the Output
- Read Wilks’ Lambda (or Pillai’s Trace) in the Multivariate Tests table for the independent variable, now interpreted after adjusting for the covariate(s).
- Check the follow-up univariate tests (adjusted for the covariate) to see which specific dependent variable(s) show a group difference once the covariate is controlled.
- Review the Estimated Marginal Means for each dependent variable: these are the covariate-adjusted group means.

MANCOVA vs MANOVA: Understanding the Difference
MANOVA compares raw group means across multiple dependent variables. MANCOVA does the same comparison after removing the statistical influence of a covariate, giving adjusted means that isolate the group effect more precisely. If your design has a known confounding variable (prior ability, baseline score, age) and multiple related outcomes, MANCOVA is the test that accounts for both at once; using plain MANOVA leaves the confound unaddressed.
