Odds Ratios, Relative Risk, and Getting the Right Measure
Epidemiological research reports risk differently depending on the study design. Case-control studies report odds ratios (from logistic regression), since true incidence can’t be calculated when cases were deliberately oversampled. Cohort studies can report relative risk directly, since the full population at risk is followed over time. Confusing which measure your design actually supports, or reporting an odds ratio as if it were a relative risk, is a common and consequential error in public health write-ups.

When do I report an odds ratio instead of relative risk? Report an odds ratio whenever your design is case-control (or when using logistic regression generally). Relative risk is only directly calculable in cohort or experimental designs where you know the true incidence in each group.
