The Four Main Quantitative Design Types

  • Experimental: participants are randomly assigned to conditions, and a variable is deliberately manipulated. This is the only design type that supports strong causal claims.

  • Correlational: variables are measured as they naturally occur, with no manipulation, testing whether they relate to each other.
  • Descriptive: the goal is to characterise a sample or population (means, frequencies, proportions), without testing a relationship or difference at all.
