Both are commercial statistical packages capable of the same underlying tests, and the choice between them is driven far more by field convention than by any real capability gap for standard analyses. STATA is the more common default in economics, epidemiology, and public health, where its command-line syntax and strong panel-data and survival-analysis tooling fit established workflows. SPSS is the more common default in psychology, education, nursing, and business, where its menu-driven interface and long-standing presence in those fields’ training make it the expected tool.

Output and Reporting Differences

STATA’s output is compact and command-log-driven, well suited to including full command syntax alongside results for transparency. SPSS’s output arrives as structured, clickable tables (the Output Viewer), which most students find more directly readable without additional formatting, though it needs deliberate reformatting to meet APA table style rather than being publication-ready as generated. Neither format is inherently more rigorous; the difference is workflow, not statistical validity.

Should You Switch If Your Field Prefers STATA?

If you’re in a field where STATA is the near-universal convention (health economics, large-scale epidemiological cohort studies), learning it may be worth the investment for the papers, existing code, and collaborators you’ll encounter. If you’re a student whose specific study happens to touch epidemiological methods but whose department, committee, and prior training are SPSS-based, staying in SPSS is usually the more practical choice; the tests themselves (logistic regression, survival analysis, chi-square) are available and well-supported in both.
