What Is Two-Way ANOVA and When Do You Use It?

Two-way (factorial) ANOVA tests the effect of two independent categorical variables on one continuous dependent variable, and, critically, whether those two variables interact. For example: does teaching method (A) and student gender (B) each independently affect test scores, and does the effect of teaching method depend on gender? Use it when you have two categorical independent variables and want to test both their individual (main) effects and their combined (interaction) effect.

If you only have one independent variable, use one-way ANOVA instead.

Assumptions You Must Check Before Running It in SPSS

  • Normality of the dependent variable within each of the cell groups (each combination of the two factors), checked via Shapiro-Wilk or residual normality plots.
  • Homogeneity of variance across all cells, checked with Levene’s Test (SPSS produces this automatically in the output).
  • Independence of observations: each case appears in exactly one cell.

How to Run It in SPSS (Step by Step)

  1. Go to Analyze > General Linear Model > Univariate.
  2. Move your continuous outcome into Dependent Variable.
  3. Move both categorical independent variables into Fixed Factor(s).
  4. Click Plots, move one factor to the Horizontal Axis and the other to Separate Lines, then Add. This produces a profile plot for visualising the interaction.
  5. Click Options, request Descriptive statistics and Estimates of effect size, then Continue > OK.

How to Interpret the Output

  1. Check the interaction effect first, in the Tests of Between-Subjects Effects table: this is the row labeled with both factor names joined (e.g. “TeachingMethod * Gender”).
  2. If the interaction is significant, interpret it before the main effects: a significant interaction means the effect of one factor genuinely depends on the level of the other, and the main effects alone can be misleading. Follow up with simple effects analysis (comparing one factor’s levels within each level of the other).
  3. If the interaction is not significant, interpret the two main effects directly, each with its own F, df, p, and partial eta-squared.
  4. Use the profile plot: non-parallel lines suggest an interaction; parallel lines suggest none.

How to Report the Results in APA Format

A two-way ANOVA revealed a significant interaction between teaching method and gender on test scores, F(1, 116) = 6.42, p = .013, partial η² = .05. Simple effects analysis showed that teaching method significantly improved scores for female students, F(1, 116) = 9.87, p = .002, but not for male students, F(1, 116) = 0.41, p = .524.

Two-Way ANOVA vs One-Way ANOVA: Understanding the Difference

One-way ANOVA tests one independent variable’s effect on one outcome. Two-way ANOVA tests two independent variables at once, plus whether they interact. Running separate one-way ANOVAs for each factor instead of a single two-way ANOVA loses the interaction entirely. A real interaction effect is often the most interesting finding in a factorial design.
