For a student who’s comfortable navigating dialog boxes and reading structured output tables, SPSS gets you to a result faster. For a student comfortable writing and debugging code, R offers more flexibility and, for advanced or unusual analyses, often more capability.

Learning Curve and Time Investment

SPSS’s learning curve is shorter for standard tests: if your dissertation needs a t-test, ANOVA, regression, or factor analysis, the menu path is discoverable without prior programming experience. Field and committee convention often decides this before personal preference does. Psychology, education, nursing, and business programmes lean heavily toward SPSS, both in what committees expect to see and what’s taught in required methods courses. Fields with stronger computational or open-science norms (parts of biostatistics, some economics and data-science-adjacent programmes) lean more toward R. Check what your specific programme and committee actually expect before deciding, since a technically sound analysis in the “wrong” tool for your field can still raise unnecessary questions at defence.
