The Three Types of Validity: Content, Construct, and Criterion
Validity asks whether your instrument measures what it claims to measure, and it comes in several distinct forms:
- Content validity: whether the instrument’s items adequately cover the full concept being measured, typically judged by expert review rather than statistically.
- Construct validity: whether the instrument actually measures the underlying theoretical construct it’s meant to, commonly evaluated with factor analysis, which shows whether items group together the way theory predicts.
- Criterion validity: whether scores on the instrument correlate with an external, independently measured outcome (e.g. does a job-satisfaction scale predict actual turnover).
The Three Types of Reliability: Internal Consistency, Test-Retest, and Inter-Rater
Reliability asks whether your instrument produces consistent results, independent of whether it’s measuring the right thing:
- Internal consistency: whether items within the same scale correlate with each other, the type reliability analysis (Cronbach’s alpha) directly tests.
- Test-retest reliability: whether the same respondents produce similar scores when measured again after a suitable interval.
- Inter-rater reliability: whether different observers or coders arrive at similar scores when rating the same thing.
How These Concepts Precede and Justify Factor Analysis and Cronbach’s Alpha
Validity and reliability aren’t abstract methodology-chapter boilerplate; they’re the justification for two of the most commonly run procedures in scale-based research. Construct validity is why you run factor analysis before treating a set of items as measuring one thing. Internal consistency reliability is why you run Cronbach’s alpha before summing items into a composite score. A methodology section that names these concepts and ties them explicitly to the specific tests you ran is far stronger than one that runs the tests without ever explaining why they were necessary.
